Repairing Color-Damaged Hair - Brighton Salon

The Unhealthy Signs: Brittle, Dry Hair, Dull Color, Breakage, and Frizz

Quick Tips:
- Stop doing harsh treatments immediately. You need to give your chance to rest, heal, and restore itself. This includes chemical hair dyes, hair bleaching, chemical straightening, and/or chemical curling.
- The hair stylist at +Brighton Salon will never let you go through a treatment if your hair is not ready.
- Wet hair is more delicate than dry hair, and thus it stretches and breaks easily. Treat it like a special fabric and let it drip-dry for a while before you use a towel. Take extra care with your hair when it's wet - please!

What Do I Do With Dry, Brittle Hair?

- Do not shampoo more than twice a week. Of course, wash your body as much as you wish as long as you put your hair up. If you must wash your hair more, use minimal or no shampoo. This is because if you wash your hair too often the natural sebum (natural oil produced by the scalp) will not have a chance to reach the ends of your hair and provide maximal protection. Shampoo especially strips off your hair's natural protective oils.

- You may feel that your hair is very oily, greasy in the first week. This is because when you wash your hair a lot, the scalp produces excess sebum because it "realizes" that your hair is constantly being stripped of it. This means that once you cut down your hair washing, your scalp will need some time to adjust. You may have to use dry shampoo to lessen this after-effect.

- Allow your hair to air dry instead of drying it with heat. Heat drying is quite harsh on the hair, and without the supervision of a professional stylist, it can cause extra, unnecessary damage.

- Begin doing deep-conditioning treatments and using masques. This will greatly reduce frizz as the hair will become more nourished and healthy. You only need about 1 tablespoon of product to last all week! We sell the exclusive and absolutely amazing +Oribe Signature Moisture Masque. This masque is one of the best you can find. Additionally, we also carry four different luxury +Shu Uemura masques for different hair types. Our hair specialists will be very happy to personally consult you on which masque will be ideal for your individual hair.

What Should I Do To Restore Shine and Color to My Hair?

- Consider getting keratin treatment. Keratin is the protein that builds the hair, nails, and a large part of the skin - thus it is absolutely essential!

- Use a deep, intensive, specialized conditioner for color-treated hair. Our fantastic and highly-educated stylists can explain to you which products are the best for your individual hair and why.

- Hot water opens up the cuticle. Thus, at the end of your shower, finish off with cold water. This will cause your hair cuticles to close and stay secure, therefore protecting themselves and becoming soft and shiny!

How Do I Stop Hair Breakage?

- Use a comb instead of a brush. Combs are less damaging to the hair as they pull out less of it. A wide-toothed comb is best.

- Gradually brush from the tips of your hair, and work your way up. This way, the hair doesn't need to buffer as much stress, greatly reducing the chance of breakage and/or frayed ends.

- If hair extensions or weaves have been put in incorrectly by a non-professional salon or have simply not been maintained properly, stop wearing them as this will cause more damage and breakage to your hair. Remember, that when getting these kinds of treatments on your hair (harsh ones) you must be very, very careful to choose a highly reputable salon and ask lots of questions to make sure you can fully protect your hair.

- Trimming your hair regularly will prevent split ends and will keep your hair healthy.

What Do I Do With Frizzy Hair?

- Use a finishing oil or serum. This stops your hair from getting frizzy while also protecting it from the environment (such as UV light or pollution). Each finishing oil/serum is different. Our personal stylists will be happy to consult with you so that you can make the best choice for your hair. As a specially-licensed salon, we are allowed to carry the state-of-the-art +Kerastase, Oribe, and Shu Uemura brands for your beauty benefits. Argan/Moroccan oil is also an excellent option for this.
