Feed Your Hair: Foods To Eat For Healthy Locks

We are what we eat...

That’s how the saying goes, and it couldn’t be truer.

When it comes to creating luscious locks, the food that we put into our bodies is the main strategy that we advise you all to endorse.

There are certain foods that are more effective than others. Ensure that you eat and drink platefuls of these ingredients and the results will show in your hair.

Berries of all kinds

Berries are a hot house of essential vitamins and minerals. Packed with antioxidants which neutralise the influence of free radicals in the blood stream, they also boost the growth and health of the hair follicle. Add blueberries, strawberries and blackberries to your porridge, salad or smoothie.

Eggs

Eggs are a protein powerhouse. There's enough protein in an egg to create a little chick so just imagine what an egg can do for your hair! Add to toast for an instant hair boost.

Asparagus

When lightly steamed with some chilli, garlic and butter, asparagus is a delicious snack and it's also highly healthy. Asparagus has a high silica content, a mineral which bolsters hair, joint and skin health.

Citrus Fruits

Vitamin C promotes healing and citrus fruits also contain collagen, which is responsible for keeping skin youthful and elastic. Drink lemon water, spritz a lime or lemon over salads and avocados or eat satsumas and oranges for a quick snack.

Swiss Chard

Swiss chard contains many dietary essentials such as vitamins A, C and K as well as biotin, potassium, magnesium and iron.

Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are often touted as a super food and they've been around for a long time. They are also easy to add to virtually everything including salads, smoothies and porridge. Chia seeds also include copper which supposedly counteracts the onset of grey hair.

Oily Fish

Fish is full of the good kind of fat...the oily, slick kind that are essential for our hair health. Load up on salmon, tuna and mackerel and enjoy it with a vitamin boosting salad peppered with chia seeds. Eat 2-3 times weekly.

Beans, glorious beans

Legumes are a food group that a lot of people skimp on. Any kind of bean from the kidney to the broad will aid your hair. Beans contain biotin which is a top hair ingredient. Add beans to wraps, tacos, rice dishes and salads.

Kale

Kale is really doing the rounds in LA and for good reason. It's one of the best foods there is. Closely related to the wild cabbage, kale is loaded with all sorts of good stuff. If you aren't keen on the taste, which can be bitter, blend two cups of kale into a cucumber, coconut water and celery smoothie, or lightly steam and eat with fish or chicken.

Spinach

Spinach was gobbled up by Popeye and it didn't do him any harm. Blitz into your smoothies or have as a side with your main meal.

Avocado

Avocado boasts healthy fats which assist your skin, hair and eyes. Eat half of an avocado and sprinkle with chilli, fennel seeds, lemon and salt and pepper to taste. Mash with a fork and eat on toast!

Lean Meats

Any source of protein is great for hair, which is made from keratin. Add chicken, beef and turkey to your diet for lots of iron.
